Ipads. Many applications. One device.
Apple's Ipad has become a must-have item in many classrooms. It's functionality applies to a wide-range of grade-levels, abilities, as well as curriculum links. Here are the features which are applicable to the school environment:
- touchpad and swipe features for easy, simple navigation
- integrated microphone and webcam for capturing learning as well as for demonstrating learning
- many downloadable, educational applications, covering all grade-levels and content
- wireless connectivity for portability and versatility, meaning a student could take it with them from class-to-class without having to plug-in
- sharing ability allows students to collaborate and connect their work with the world
In the classroom. Collaboration. Creativity.
Shared book, text reader, voice recorder, journal,
writer's notebook, and more.
The Ipad's capabilities make it a versatile piece of technology,
giving students and teachers a lot of options with in the classroom.
When utilized alongside Apple TV, the Ipad allows students and
teachers to be networked, sharing information, documents,

Listen. Read. Record.
In the classroom, the Ipad replaces the traditional book, but still provides
rich, colourful pictures students have come to expect from picture books.
It can be used as a support for guided reading (i.e., shared text, phonemic
awareness and phonics, word building). As a listening or independent reading
centre, students will have access to thousands of ability-related texts at their
fingertips, instead of being limited to the school's resources. And, for the
teacher, the Ipad has the ability to record and store student learning such as
running records, read alouds, and oral comprehension.

Draw. Write. Publish.
In Kindergarten, students develop writing skills through oral conversations. As their vocabularies and understanding of letter knowledge grow, so too does their ability to translate their ideas in to written form. The Ipad provides students with a vehicle for which they can record their thoughts, orally, and then write them down afterwards as they listen to their recordings. Once complete, students can then share and publish with the world.
It provides them a tool to practice forming letters, words, as well as shapes.

If you can speak it, you can write it.
Students in Kindergarten develop their oral language skills by sharing their ideas, thoughts, and plans with their peers. Being able to clearly articulate their thoughts is a vital skill. With the use of an Ipad, students can record their thinking and their plans, review the recording and revise it as per the success criteria.
Students could use the Ipad as a video recorder and narrate the things that are important to them. They could also use the Ipad as a microphone, detailing a special event in their life or a routine in their day.
